Position Summary

 

This position acts in the capacity of instructor, evaluator, course development resource person for Department staff. This position will assist the Transit Training Coordinator in the establishment and application of operating and safety policies within the scope of the Transit Operator Training Program, as well as the investigation and evaluation of Transit related accidents. This position reports to the Transit Training Coordinator.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Support the Transit Training Coordinator in developing, implementing and evaluating safety and performance based training programs across Transit Operations, Fleet and equipment operators.
  • Develop, deliver and maintain vehicle, equipment and operational training programs, including new operator recruitment, certification, probationary reviews and ongoing proficiency evaluations.
  • Instruct and certify Transit Operators, Fleet personnel, management and other staff, including determining operating limitations, recommending supplemental training and ensuring compliance with certification standards.
  • Deliver a wide range of education programs such as accessibility, non violent crisis intervention, defensive and emergency driving, mentor training, mobility securement, workplace anti violence and general safety practices.
  • Lead incident and collision review processes, conduct accident analysis, perform safety inspections and provide training recommendations to address compliance, risk and operational improvements.
  • Oversee, train, mentor and evaluate Relief Transit Training Officers and Mentors, facilitate performance reviews and ensure consistent application of training standards and procedures.
  • Maintain training standards, records, manuals and standard operating procedures, contribute to equipment evaluation and long term training strategy, and ensure compliance with Federal, Provincial, Corporate and Occupational Health and Safety requirements

Key Qualifications

 

  • Typically, the education and experience required for this role are obtained through the combination of a College or University degree or related certificate program in administration, management or adult education coupled with three (3) to five (5) years’ experience as an Instructor, and
  • Strong knowledge of adult education principles, instructional techniques and effective delivery of training programs within a transit operational environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of transit vehicles, equipment, route structures, urban transit operations, and applicable City, Federal and Provincial policies, regulations and safety standards.
  • Demonstrated instructional and communication skills, with the ability to clearly present information, lead groups, prepare reports and consult effectively with staff at all levels and the public.
  • Proven leadership, supervisory and change management abilities, including conflict resolution, relationship building, independent decision making and the application of sound judgment.
  • Strong organizational, technical and administrative skills, including record keeping, data analysis, report preparation, event coordination and proficiency with Microsoft Office and Windows based systems.

Working/Other Conditions

 

  • Must possess and maintain a Class 2A driver's license. Must have a vehicle available for work usage (a travel allowance is provided).
