Position Summary
This position safely and effectively performs a variety of skilled duties including new construction, repair, and maintenance in Water and Sewer Operations. This position reports to a Coordinator or Crew Lead.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform skilled duties in maintaining the water distribution and sewer collection systems.
- Dig trenches or excavations by hand and using power-operated tools and equipment.
- Maintain good working relationship with fellow workers and supervisors.
- Direct equipment operators with hand signals for grade, repair, or replacement of pipes, etc., in excavation activities.
- Supervise and train other employees assigned as helpers.
- Operate tandem and single axle trucks assigned to Water and Sewer Operations.
- Assist in a variety of other duties and safely use equipment in Water and Sewer Operations.
- Effectively perform work as instructed by the Supervisor or senior designate with little supervision including reporting, documentation and record keeping components.
- Follow all rules and regulations as set out in the Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and the City of Regina Occupational Health and Safety Manual.
- Perform related work as required.
Key Qualifications
- Typically, the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are obtained through a minimum of two (2) years experience as a semi-skilled labourer or acting skilled labourer in Water Distribution and Sewer Collection Operations, or a related industry.
- Must bring Level 1 Operator Certification, as identified under the Saskatchewan Water and Wastewater Works Operator Certification Standards, in the category relevant to their operating area and obtain Level 2 within 1 year.
- Knowledge of and experience in methods, procedures, maintenance, and operations associated with water and sewer construction.
- Knowledge, ability, and experience in working in shored excavations to depths of fifteen feet (15’) or more doing water and sewer work.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with minimal supervision while following both verbal and written instructions.
- Demonstrated ability to safely use hand tools and equipment to perform work meeting the quality and productivity requirements.
- Basic computer skills including familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access).
- Demonstrated skills to establish and maintain effective working relations and a respectful work environment with superiors, subordinates, co-workers, and the general public.
- Demonstrated ability to listen, understand, and respond to public and internal inquiries/concerns in an acceptable and respectful manner.
- Demonstrated ability to lift fifty (50) pounds on a daily basis.
- Ability to interpret, understand and manage work in accordance with the general rules and regulations of the Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act, other legislation, and expectation of the City of Regina’s policies, standards, practices, and guidelines.
- Ability to learn and run new equipment and complete required certifications.
Working/Other Conditions
- Must possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license
- Must possess a valid 1-A driver’s license or be eligible to obtain it within 90
- Must have or be willing to obtain training/certification in Confined Space Entry, Safe Trenching, WHMIS, First Aid, and
- Must obtain and be able to obtain the necessary permits and certifications to operate equipment as required.
- Must be physically fit to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position and have the ability to lift and carry weights up to 50 pounds on a daily basis.
- Must be able and willing to perform work of a physical nature in field environments and inclement conditions.
- Must be willing to be on call, perform overtime, and work shift and/or irregular hours.
- Must be comfortable working in environments where sewage is present.
- Must respond to call outs and emergencies as required.
