Sewerjet/Hydrovac Operator - Sewer and Drainage Operation

Position Summary

This position operates multipurpose heavy mobile and stationary equipment in the Sewer and Drainage Operations branch. The position carries out assignments where emphasis is placed on superior operating skill and infrastructure knowledge where errors in judgement may be costly, difficult to rectify, and may involve personal hazards to others.  This position typically reports to a Coordinator.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Operate Sewer and Drainage Operations combination sewer cleaner jet/vac/hydro excavating Class III and IV equipment, safely, efficiently and effectively.
• Inspect, assess, monitor, operate and maintain equipment performing minor repairs (such as replacing jet nozzles) and/or identify necessary repairs.
• Inspect, assess, monitor, clear and clean domestic and storm sewer systems including mains and storm drains utilizing specialized tool attachments, such as hydraulic root cutters.
• Monitor, identify and evaluate infrastructure assets and services for operational performance, community safety and compliance with corporate policies and standards.
• Interpret and understand domestic and storm sewer linear system drawings and operational information as required including specifications, drawings, diagrams, manuals, work orders and city policies and standards to ensure compliance with prescribed procedures and methods.
• Requisition and purchase material, small tools and supplies within the limits of established authority. 
• Hydro-excavate sewer and drainage and utility infrastructure, documenting location and pertinent information of work performed.
• Provide written and electronic reports as required. Use record systems and technology to access and input infrastructure information.
• Lead, mentor, and direct crew members to ensure efficient and effective work processes.
• Operate boilers associated with sewer cleaning.
• Perform preventative maintenance on regular program areas regarding storm and domestic sewer systems.
• Perform related duties as required.

Key Qualifications

• Grade Twelve (12) or General Education Development (GED) equivalency.
• Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in sewer and drainage operations using Class III and IV equipment utilized for jetting, cleaning, educating, and hydro excavating.
• Level two (2) Operator Certification, as identified under the Saskatchewan Water and Wastewater Works Operator Certification Standards in the category relevant to their operating area.
• Thorough knowledge of the procedures, use, care, mechanics and routine maintenance involved in the winter and summer operation and routine maintenance of Class III and IV equipment utilized for jetting, cleaning, educating, and hydro excavating.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of the methods, procedures, maintenance and operation associated with the various linear systems in Sewer and Drainage Operations.
• Demonstrated ability to systematically troubleshoot and effectively correct functional issues with sewer systems.
• Ability to operate boiler systems.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively direct a crew and coach other employees.
• Demonstrated ability to perform heavy work of a physical nature on a daily basis over sustained periods and inclement conditions.
• Demonstrated ability and initiative to work independently with minimum of supervision.
• Demonstrated ability to follow and communicate verbal and written instructions associated with work orders, work procedure manuals, work programs, construction specifications, drawings and plans, etc.
• Ability to assist in training other employees in the operation, servicing, maintenance and care of equipment.
• Demonstrated ability to listen, understand and respond to public and internal inquires/concerns both verbally and in written form, in an acceptable, sensitive, positive and respectful manner.

Working/Other Conditions

• Must possess a valid Class 3 Driver’s License with an “A” Endorsement.
• Must bring Boiler Operator Certification.
• Must obtain certification as a combination sewer cleaner jet/vac/hydro excavating equipment operator.
• Must have the necessary permits and certifications to operate Class III and IV equipment utilized for jetting, cleaning, educating, and hydro excavating sewer and drainage operations equipment.
• Must be able and willing to perform work of a physical nature in field environments and inclement conditions.
• May be required to work standby, shift and/or irregular hours.
• Must be able to work with equipment that may have been in contact with raw or partially treated wastewater in varying plant environmental conditions.
• Must respond to call outs and emergencies as required.
