Position Summary

 

In an environment that supports continuous improvement and under the supervision of the Assistant Chief, Safety & Logistics, this employee assumes overall responsibility for the administration, organization and performance of the maintenance operation of Fire Department buildings and equipment. This employee is responsible for the direction and training of assigned personnel, as well as records, plans, schedules work and order supplies. The work is performed with minimum supervision and is evaluated on the basis of program achievement, results and overall effectiveness.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Plans, schedules, assigns and supervises the service, maintenance, overhaul and inspection of all types of Fire Department & communications equipment.
  • Services, repairs and maintains tools and equipment used in and supporting firefighting.
  • Performs general facility repairs, painting, building shelves, cupboards, tables etc.
  • Maintains required records relating to equipment repairs and inspections.
  • Maintains shop inventory of department maintenance equipment, tools and materials. Assesses damages and provides estimates of labour and material costs for repairs.
  • Estimates materials, supplies and equipment needed for completion of approved projects. Assists in the evaluation of any new equipment the department may purchase.
  • Diagnoses maintenance defects, determining and ordering necessary parts and materials required for repairs.
  • Requisitions supplies, materials and equipment required to complete tasks and projects.
  • Assists in establishing standards and instructions for service and daily maintenance of facilities and equipment.
  • Assists in the instruction in the use of equipment in liaison with the Training Division, as required.
  • Inspects contract work to ensure adherence to plans and specifications, and observance to safety practices and policies.
  • Checks work in progress and upon completion, ensures adherence to standard trade practices. Utilizes a computerized maintenance system for all aspects of shop operations.
  • Assists in budget preparation and monitors expenditures; provides explanations for variances and deviations from expected expenditures.
  • Utilizes a computerized maintenance system for all aspects of shop operations
  • Assists mechanics as required.
  • Works independently and assists in development measures to ensure continuous improvement of work methods, equipment performance, quality of service and working conditions.
  • Liaise with department personnel that affects repairs involving their services and/or requirements.
  • Follows all rules and regulations as set out in the Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and the City of Regina Occupational Health and Safety Manual.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Key Qualifications

 

  • Grade twelve (12) with five (5) years related trades experience.
  • A journeyman's Certificate in one of the following disciplines: plumbing, electrical, carpentry and knowledge of tools and equipment used in fire fighting would be considered an asset.
  • Thorough knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools and equipment relevant to the assigned trade.
  • Considerable knowledge of the applicable bylaws, codes and regulations relating to the maintenance and repair of firefighting equipment.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to repair SCBA and other firefighting equipment.
  • Must be in good physical condition and able to climb ladders and scaffolding for painting, carpentry, electrical and general maintenance work.
  • Ability to organize work effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision and exercise sound judgement and decision making.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to understand blueprints and sketches.
  • Ability to operate a microcomputer including Windows-based and Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Knowledge of the general rules and regulations of the Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and the City of Regina Occupational Health and Safety Manual.
  • Skill in the use and operation of power tools and equipment.

Working/Other Conditions

 

Must possess a valid Fireman's Certificate. Must possess a valid class (5) driver's licence
