Position Summary
In an environment that supports continuous improvement and under the general supervision of the Trades Coordinator – Mechanical/Electrical, this employee will apply Journeyperson Electrician skills and knowledge to diagnose, test, repair, alter, construct, install and maintain electrical, control, lighting, security and sound systems in City facilities. The work is performed independently with latitude for determining specific job methods; however, work priorities are established in consultation with the Trades Coordinator. Assignments are generally in the form of work orders and/or oral instructions but may be accompanied by detailed written instructions, sketches, drawing, specifications, maintenance schedules, etc. Work is subject to inspection in progress and upon completion. A Journeyperson Electrician may be required to supervise other tradespeople.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Diagnoses, evaluates, repairs, and installs electrical, control, lighting, security, sound, and underground systems in new and existing City facilities.
- Lays out wiring systems per drawings, specifications, and codes; measures, cuts, bends, threads, and installs conduit; pulls and connects wire to circuit breakers, transformers, and other components; splices wires as needed.
- Maintains, repairs, and installs distribution boards, panels, switches, lights, junction/outlet boxes, and related components.
- Assists in establishing and performing preventative maintenance on electrical, control, lighting, sound, and outdoor lighting systems; secures wiring, fixtures, and equipment.
- Installs and maintains emergency power/lighting systems, generators, motors, grounding lines, and sheathed cables; troubleshoots underground systems.
- Tests circuits for continuity, compatibility, and safety using electrical test equipment.
- Reviews building plans, prepares sketches, estimates and requisitions materials, and maintains stock of parts and equipment.
- Obtains permits, recommends and inspects subcontractor work, and assists with project cost estimates.
- Ensures compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations; supervises tradespeople; performs related duties as required.
Key Qualifications
- Grade eleven (11) with Science 20 and Mathematics 20 (CORE) or Grade (11) with algebra, geo-trig and physics. Journeyperson Certification in the Electrical Trade is required.
- Two (2) years current Journeyperson experience in the Electrical Trade in the building construction and maintenance area.
- Considerable knowledge of standard methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment use in the electrical trade.
- Knowledge and ability to diagnose and repair existing and to install new electrical, control, lighting, security and sound systems.
- Knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code, the National Building Code, Canadian Standards Association Specifications, the City of Regina Building Bylaw and other codes and regulations applicable to the trade and job duties.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards, safety precautions and regulations of the trade.
- Knowledge of the work of related trades.
- Knowledge of the general rules and regulations of the Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and the City of Regina Occupational Health and Safety Manual.
- Ability to work safely, locate, diagnose and repair malfunctions in electrical systems, appliances and equipment.
- Ability to plan and prepare cost estimates for the installation, maintenance or modification of electrical, control, lighting, security or sound systems in new and existing buildings.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics and specifications.
- Ability to maintain accurate records of labour, materials and equipment used in the performance of duties.
- Ability to work in a variety of positions for extended periods or to climb and balance on ladders or scaffolding while working at varying heights (i.e. the repair of light standards at Taylor Field and Mount Pleasant Park).
- Ability to give, understand and execute oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Skill in the use of the tools of the trade.
Working/Other Conditions
- Must possess a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 driver’s license and a First Aid Certificate.
- May be required to work shift work and is subject to call-out when a problem arises in his/her field of expertise.
- The employee will be expected to provide a standardized set of tools for the trade.
