Position Summary
This position is responsible for performing journeyperson level carpentry duties related to a variety of City of Regina facilities that include: buildings, structures, furniture and equipment. This position reports to the Trades Coordinator Carpentry.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Through use of standard carpentry tools, construct, erect, install, renovate and repair buildings, structures, furniture, equipment and components using a variety of standard building materials.
- Read drawings or sketches to determine materials required, dimensional requirements and installation procedures. May be required to prepare sketches of proposed construction such as wall assemblies or millwork.
- Lay out work in the field or shop using recognized procedures and tools of the trade. May be required to operate at a surveyor's level.
- Estimate quantity and quality of materials required for work and requisition material in accordance with policy and signing authority.
- Arrange for sub-contract work as required and inspect the work of sub-contractors to ensure conformance with specifications and quality standards.
- Prepare or assist in the preparation of cost estimates.
- Supervise other tradespeople as required.
- Perform related work as required.
Key Qualifications
- The knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position are obtained through successful completion of a Journeypersons Certificate in the Carpentry trade combined with two (2) to three (3) years journeyperson experience.
- Ability to perform Journeyperson level carpentry duties independently while demonstrating sound judgement, decision making and accountability.
- Knowledge of the characteristics and proper use of all building construction materials and the methods and techniques used to build, modify, maintain and repair building and structures to withstand varying loads.
- Knowledge of the National Building Code, the City of Regina Building Bylaw, the Provincial Uniform Building and Accessibility Standards and other codes and regulations applicable to the job duties.
- Ability to plan and prepare carpentry cost estimates for building construction, renovation and maintenance projects.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications.
- Ability to plan, organize work, and accurately maintain records of labour, material and equipment used in the performance of duties.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to supervise staff.
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
- Ability to perform physical labour, including heavy lifting.
Working/Other Conditions
- Must possess a valid Class 5 Saskatchewan drivers license and 1st Aid Certificate.
- The employee may be required to work shifts and will be expected to provide a standard set of hand tools.
