Position Summary
This position operates heavy mobile and stationary equipment in the Sewer and Drainage Operations Branch as part of the Field Operations team. The position carries out assignments where emphasis is placed on superior operating skill and where errors in judgement may be costly, difficult to rectify and may involve personal hazard to others.This position is responsible for daily maintenance of assigned equipment and may also be required to train other employees in the operation of Class III equipment. This position typically reports to a Crew Lead or Coordinator.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Operate Sewer and Drainage Operations Class III equipment, safely, efficiently, and effectively including hydro-vac units, front-end loaders, steam boilers, and other designated Class III equipment.
- Perform routine inspection, maintenance, and minor repairs as are necessary to ensure equipment is kept in good operating condition.
- During winter months, this position will be required to operate high pressure boilers, thawing frozen valves, curb boxes, fire hydrants, catch basins and other water assets.
- Read and interpret water linear system drawings and operational information as required.
- Operate & exercise valves and curb boxes.
- Hydrovac and repair valves, curb stops/boxes and daylight underground utilities
- Read and interpret water distribution linear system drawings and operational information as required.
- Provide field locates for water infrastructure and reporting of work performed.
- Provide direction and training of other employees as required.
- Follow all rules, procedures and regulations as set out in the Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and the City of Regina Occupational Health and Safety Manual.
- Perform related duties as required.
Key Qualifications
- Typically, the knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position are obtained through a minimum of 2000 hours experience as a Skilled Labourer in Water or Sewer Operations with demonstrated ability to operate water or sewer operations Class III equipment competently.
- Must obtain Level 1 Operator Certification, as identified under the Saskatchewan Water or Wastewater Works Operator Certification Standard, in their designated operating area (Water Distribution/Wastewater Collection) within one (1) year.
- Thorough knowledge of the operation, care, mechanics, and routine maintenance involved in the operation and routine maintenance of water and sewer linear systems Class III equipment.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of methods, procedures, maintenance, and operation associated with the various linear systems in water and sewer operations.
- Ability to provide direction and training to other employees who may be assigned as helpers.
- Demonstrated ability to perform heavy work of a physical nature on a daily basis over sustained periods and inclement conditions.
- Demonstrated ability and initiative to work independently with minimum supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to follow verbal and written instructions associated with work orders, work procedure manuals, construction specifications, drawings, and plans, etc.
- Ability to assist in training other employees in the operation, servicing, maintenance, and care of equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to provide written reports, calculating units of accomplishment, for work completed and documenting any problems that were encountered.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
- Ability to apply the general rules and regulations of the Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act, City of Regina Occupational Health and Safety Manual and National Safety Code.
Working/Other Conditions
- Must possess a valid Class 3A license.
- Must be willing and able to obtain Trailing Towing training.
- Must be able and willing to perform work of a physical nature in field environments and inclement conditions.
- Must be comfortable working in environments where sewage is present.
- Must be willing to be on call, perform overtime, and work shift and/or irregular hours.
- Must respond to call outs and emergencies as required.
