Position Summary

This is elementary technical work at the beginning level pertaining to inspection, design, construction, maintenance and operation of engineering projects. The employee in this position is responsible for very limited use of engineering instruments and drafting equipment on simple field and/or office projects, or may assist a superior on simple engineering tasks. Assignments are given in detail and all aspects of the work are performed under the supervision of a superior. Incumbents may also be required to perform or become familiar with the duties and responsibilities of senior engineering assistants to better quality themselves within the series. 

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs elementary drafting from either oral or written instructions.
  • Compiles elementary statistics from field notes and related information.
  • Assists a superior in establishing line and grade and using chain and rod.
  • Conducts traffic counts and similar simple surveys; gathers and summarizes data for compilation of statistics.
  • Maintains a variety of technical files and records pertaining to the work of the branch.
  • Reduces field notes of superior engineering assistants and prepares simple profiles and cross-sections from the field notes.
  • Cares for and safeguards survey equipment during field operations 
  • Performs related work as required.

Key Qualifications

  • A one (1) year certificate in Civil Engineering technology or an educational equivalent; or senior matriculation and a minimum of one (1) year's related experience in a municipal engineering environment.
  • Knowledge of elementary mathematics, including algebra and plane geometry.
  • Ability to make mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time under unfavourable weather conditions as required by work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations as necessitated by work assignments.

Working/Other Conditions

  • Must possess a valid Driver's License.
