The City Operations division adopts a customer-focused approach to deliver reliable services to our community. We work together to build and maintain safe roads, provide sustainable transportation, and water, waste and environmental services to our community.
Reporting to the Executive Director of City Operations, the Director of Water, Waste & Environment has full autonomy and independence to make all day-to-day operational decisions, operating within the context of overarching City policy, direction, and Council priority. As the leader of the department, the successful candidate will be responsible for strategic, operational and program planning, stakeholder relationship management, financial management and people leadership. You will assume overall responsibility for directing and overseeing a committed management team consisting of 7 branches:
- Environmental Services
- Operational Services
- Program Development & Delivery
- Sewer & Drainage Operations
- Solid Waste Operations
- Water Operations
- Water & Sewer Engineering
This position requires a holistic leader who is passionate about operational service delivery and has excellent team building skills, strong influence, political insight, strong planning, and leadership skills. This position is a member of the Division’s leadership team with responsibility to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, elected officials and provide advice and guidance to the City’s Executive Leadership Team.
Ideal Knowledge & Skills:
- Knowledge of senior leadership practices related to planning, policy development, financial management, program development / evaluation, performance and risk management, project management, contract management, customer management and human resources.
- Knowledge of issues, trends and challenges related to City specific and broader municipal operations as well as water, solid waste, and environmental service delivery.
- Knowledge in solving complex and interrelated financial, technical, programming and relationship management issues that require the development of new strategies or approaches.
- Knowledge of asset management practices in support of planning and operations.
- Requirements also include the ability to use complex analytical tools and processes such as statistical modelling, business analytics and scenario planning.
To be successful in this role, you will have demonstrated your ability to provide exceptional leadership to a team, deliver on priorities, develop forecast and budget plans and have a deep understanding and proven track record of operational service delivery. You are well known for your commitment to continuous improvement and delivering outstanding service to your customers and have a proven track record for successful long-term visioning, strategic planning, and making measured and innovative enhancements to program and service delivery. You are an inspirational leader who can instill a strong vision in your team.
