Position Summary
This position is responsible for undertaking a variety of inspections and enforcement authorized by The Construction Codes Act respecting residential buildings that contain one or two dwelling units as well as secondary suites and private swimming pools
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Inspects new and existing one- and two-unit residential buildings including secondary suites and private swimming pools to ensure compliance with National Building Code, Building Bylaw, Private Swimming Pool Bylaw and all provincial statutes, and advises owner/designer/contractors of construction deficiencies through written inspection reports.
- Liaises with the developer/contractor and appropriate City staff to ensure awareness of all appropriate approval conditions and responsilbities associated with the building permit.
- Provides technical advice and interpretation of building bylaw, National Building Code (NBC) and regulations, and responds to inquiries from the general public, contractors, property managers and various City departments on matters relating to the effective compliance of buildings for residential construction.
- Investigates and enforces complaints relating to the City Bylaw.
- Prepares monthly report on activities including status of inspections and deficiencies
- Prepares complex correspondence and reports pertaining to inspections, stop work orders, orders to comply and violations ensuring file information is organized and thorough including written documentation, photographs of scenes for evidence, interview notes and any other investigative functions completed in order to achieve compliance.
- Participates with HSET investigations and enforcement actions, in the capacity of a Building official Class 1.
- Responds to customer inquiries and requests for information
- As assigned will perform the duties of the Permit Desk including receiving and processing building permits, responding to customer inquiries, taking fees and payments and completes day end balancing reports. Ensures all information is accurate and in compliance with City policies and procedures and all provincial statutes
- Maintains filing system in accordance with branch procedure and corporate records management policies and procedures
- Performs related duties as required.
Key Qualifications
- Completion of a two (2) year diploma in Architectural Technology or Engineering Technology or educational equivalent such as Red Seal Journeyperson Carpenter and at least two (2) years related experience working in a building construction or inspection environment.
Working/Other Conditions
- Must possess or ability to possess a Building Officials Class 1 license within 6 months of employment as set out in the requirements of the Saskatchewan Building and Accessibility Standards Administration Regulations.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and have available the use of a vehicle
