Assistant Operator -Water Supply

Position Summary

This entry level position will perform activities to maintain the reliability of the wastewater, stormwater, and/or water systems. This is accomplished by maintaining equipment and other assets at lift stations, McCarthy Boulevard Pumping Station, and piping network that comprise the City’s wastewater/stormwater collection and pumping system. This position generally reports to the Operator or Lead Operator.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Assist other operators in performing daily equipment checks of the wastewater/storm lift stations and/or water pumping stations.
• Perform general maintenance and repairs of wastewater/storm lift stations and/or water pump stations operating equipment. This includes cleaning lift station wet wells and/or water reservoirs and performing minor electrical, mechanical repairs, etc.
• Perform inspections of operating equipment and make appropriate adjustments. This includes inspections of pumps, motors, fans, blowers, etc. and making appropriate adjustments.
• Perform building and ground maintenance and general custodial responsibilities of lift station and/or pump station facilities.
• Perform various water sampling and testing.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Key Qualifications

• Grade Twelve (12) or General Education Development (GED) equivalency.
• Two (2) years’ experience in the relevant area (Sewer & Drainage/Water Operations Branch).
• Level two (2) Operator Certification, as identified under the Saskatchewan Water and Wastewater Works Operator Certification Standards in the category relevant to their operating area.
• Ability to make decisive operating decisions with no supervision.
• Ability to use standard mechanics hand tools and power equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
• Knowledge of basic mechanics including routine servicing and maintenance.
• Basic knowledge and skill in the use of personal computers and the ability to maintain records using Excel.
• Ability to establish and maintain co-operative working relationships, demonstrate tact and diplomacy, and communicate effectively with a variety of internal and external customers and co-workers.
• Ability to read, comprehend and appropriately apply information and instructions from written material relevant to the duties and provide brief verbal and simple written reports.
• Basic knowledge and ability to be trained to operate the wastewater/stormwater collection system and/or water distribution system in accordance with regulations, standard operating procedures, and instructions from the other operators.

Working/Other Conditions

• Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
• Candidates must participate in training as to the operation of the Wastewater/Stormwater system and/or water system. Once trained must act as operator when required.
• Candidates must participate in training and be willing and able to complete recognized wastewater treatment and/or water distribution and certification programs or courses to perform the work and maintain status.
• Will be required to work from variable bases of operation.
• Will be required to travel to many work sites around the City.
• Must be able and willing to perform work of a physical nature in all types of plants, field environments and inclement conditions.
• Must be willing to be on call, perform overtime, work shifts and/or irregular hours.
• Must be willing to work in confined spaces including wet wells and manholes and/or valve chambers and reservoirs.
• Must be comfortable working at heights and in awkward spaces.
• Must be comfortable working in environments where sewage is present.
• Must respond to call outs and emergencies as required.
